Simple Tips for Installing and Caring for Your Honed Tiles

Installing honed tiles follows the same basic process as other tile types but their distinctive finish does require some special attention. While the installation process isn't more difficult, these practical tips will help ensure beautiful results and keep your surfaces looking their best for years to come:

Installation Essentials

  • Always purchase 10% extra to account for cuts and future repairs.

  • Use polymer-modified thinset for honed marble tile as regular mastic won't work in wet areas.

  • Install large-format tiles with leveling spacers to prevent uneven edges.

  • For honed tile bathrooms, waterproof the substrate before installation, especially in showers.

  • With honed marble tile, plan your layout first to group similar-colored pieces since natural stone varies in shade and tone from piece to piece, even within the same batch.

Maintenance Made Easy

  • For honed tile kitchens, wipe spills immediately since acids like lemon juice can etch natural stone.

  • Clean all honed surfaces with warm water and pH-neutral cleaners only.

  • Avoid vinegar, bleach, and abrasive cleaners which can damage the finish.

  • Seal honed marble tile every 6-12 months (test by dropping water - if it doesn't bead up, reseal).

  • Protect floors with felt furniture pads and entryway mats to prevent scratching..

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are honed tiles?

Honed tiles have a smooth, flat finish that's been ground down but not polished to a high shine. This creates a sophisticated satin-like appearance with natural depth and character.

2. What is the difference between honed and matte tile?

Honed tile has a subtle luster that highlights natural patterns, while matte tile is completely flat with no reflectivity. Honed finish tiles showcase the material's true beauty with more dimension than matte surfaces.

3. Is honed finish tile hard to clean?

Honed tile is easy to maintain with just warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Natural stone varieties should be sealed periodically, but daily cleaning is straightforward.

4. What are the disadvantages of tiles with a honed finish?

Natural stone and marble honed tiles need occasional resealing, which takes just minutes once a year. This minor maintenance requirement is far outweighed by their timeless elegance, superior slip resistance, and ability to hide scratches better than polished surfaces.

5. What is honed finish tile, and how does it differ from polished tile?

Tiles with a honed finish have a smooth, matte finish with little to no shine, making it softer and more slip-resistant than highly reflective polished tiles.

6. Is honed finish a good choice for tiles in the bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes, the texture of these tiles make it less slippery when wet, making them the perfect candidate for bathroom and shower floor tile applications. They also hides water spots and fingerprints better than polished surfaces on walls and backsplashes.

7. Do these tiles need to be sealed?

In most cases, yes. Honed stone and marble tiles are more porous than polished, so sealing helps protect against stains and moisture absorption.
