• Layout planning: Mark level reference lines and dry-fit your tiles to see how the pattern will look. Start with the center or a focal point to ensure that your terracotta tile floor or wall design is symmetrical.

• Selecting the adhesive: Use thinset rated for your specific application (i.e. wall vs floor) and your terracotta tile size. Large-format tiles require a modified thinset with stronger bonding. Smaller mosaic tiles may come with mesh-backing which makes installations much simpler!

• Cutting tiles: Terracotta porcelain tile is harder than ceramic, and requires a wet saw with a diamond blade. Score and snap cutters are suitable for straight cuts on ceramic, but will most likely break porcelain.

• The curing time: Once tiles are installed, wait 24-48 hours before grouting. After grouting, you need another 72 hours before using the space. Rushing causes the tiles to shift and the grout to fracture.

• Grouting and sealing: For broader joints, use sanded grout, while for thin lines, use non-sanded. Seal grout after it has cured to avoid stains, especially in terracotta tile bathroom, shower and kitchen designs where spills occur.
